Flower bed design
Good beds are designed, not just dug. We plan each one around the architecture of the house, how the sun actually moves across that spot, and how much upkeep you genuinely want to take on. A design that looks great and needs constant attention is a design that looks bad in two years.
Plant selection follows the conditions rather than a catalog. Full-sun Gulf Coast exposure calls for dwarf yaupon, Texas sage, loropetalum, and knockout roses. Shade under a mature canopy calls for cast iron plant, holly fern, and caladiums. Putting a sun plant in shade is the most common reason a bed underperforms, and no amount of fertilizer corrects it.
Proportion decides whether a bed reads as intentional. Beds that are too narrow for the elevation behind them look like an afterthought no matter what is planted in them, so widening the bed line is often the single change that does the most work.
New flower bed installation
From bare dirt to finished bed, the sequence is: shape the layout, amend the soil, set the edging, plant, and mulch. Most residential installs are done in a day or two, and the change to the front of a house is immediate.
Soil amendment is the step that separates a bed that thrives from one that limps along, and it is the step most commonly skipped. Houston clay compacts hard and drains poorly, and construction fill around newer homes is worse. Working in quality compost and topsoil before anything gets planted is what makes the difference three years later.
Edging is what holds the whole thing together visually. We install natural stone, steel, or composite border with a cut trench behind it so the line stays crisp instead of blurring into the lawn after two mowing seasons. Then two to three inches of mulch, kept pulled back from trunks and stems so nothing rots at the base.
Grass planting & sodding
Whether it is a new-construction yard that never got real turf or bare patches that will not recover, we install sod that actually takes root. Ground preparation is most of the outcome: breaking up compaction, grading so water runs away from the house, and amending the soil before a single piece goes down.
Laying fresh sod over the same compacted ground that killed the last lawn just repeats the failure at your expense. If the underlying problem is compaction or drainage, that gets fixed first or the new turf is temporary.
We match the grass to the site. St. Augustine tolerates the shade most established Houston lots have, while Bermuda handles full sun and foot traffic better but needs more frequent mowing. After installation you get clear watering guidance for the first critical weeks, which is when most new sod is won or lost.

- How much does a flower bed installation cost?
- It depends entirely on size, edging material, and plant selection, so we quote in person after seeing the space. Every estimate is free and there is no obligation. We do not publish prices because a bed that is right for one property would be the wrong quote for another.
- What is the best time of year to plant in Houston?
- Fall is ideal. Planting in October or November gives roots the entire cool season to establish before summer heat arrives. Spring works well too. Midsummer planting is possible but needs far more watering attention to get through the first months.
- How long does a bed installation take?
- Most residential flower bed projects are finished in one or two days, including shaping the bed, amending the soil, setting the edging, planting, and mulching. Larger designs across a full property take longer, and we tell you the schedule before starting.
- What kind of edging lasts longest in Texas?
- Natural stone and steel both hold up well. Stone suits established and wooded properties, steel gives a cleaner line on modern homes. Plastic roll edging is cheapest and consistently the first thing to fail, heaving out of the ground within a couple of seasons here.
- Can you fix the landscaping my builder installed?
- That is a large share of our work. Builder beds are typically too narrow, planted into unamended construction fill, and generic. Widening the bed line, amending the soil, and replanting transforms a front elevation without a full redesign.
